Owner, Karen Dole, grew up in New England amongst winding roads, woods and lakes. One of her favorite memories is of the annual Craftsman's Fair at the base of the mountain down the road, where artisans would display their works of art. There were potters, blacksmiths, glass blowers, weavers, knitters, woodworkers, quilters, sculptors, painters, and the always-favorite: fudge and lollipop makers.
Karen's love for creation led her to obtain a B.A. in Fine Art from UCSD, and go on to a fulfilling career in animation and illustration. In 2006, she decided to create a space for local families to gather for creative endeavors and at the same time, provide the opportunity to pick up a toy or gift within the neighborhood. While nurturing the wonderful, artsy culture of Mission Hills, she hoped to support herself and her daughter.
Now years later, Karen has found that being a part of the community in such a way has not only supported the family, but has meant much more than she ever imagined. At the shop, she and her team have gotten to know countless families over the years, and have followed them through ups and downs, family milestones, and everything from learning to speak to bringing a new baby home from the hospital or proudly presenting a new pet.
As the name suggests, Hillside Artisans tends towards an artsy product mix. We love great design, rich colors, and wonderful textures. We bring items into the shop that inspire us in some way. It is our hope that when you leave, you will be inspired as well.
